Chino PD to Discuss Use of Drones at Public Forum
Chino PD is soliciting feedback and conducting preliminary research into the purchase of camera equipped remote controlled unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), commonly referred to as drones. The Department will be hosting a Public Forum to address privacy issues, discuss draft policy and seek public feedback about the use of UAV’s by law enforcement. The Public is encouraged to attend this forum, which will be held on Wednesday February 1st, 2017 at 6:00 PM in the Chino Police Department Community Room located at 5450 Walnut Avenue Chino, CA 91710.
The uses of the UAV can vary widely, but would primarily include traffic collision investigation, crime scene mapping, emergencies and life-saving circumstances such as locating missing people, aiding search teams in locating suspects; but not on routine patrols. A police department working group began researching law enforcement UAV’s earlier last year. The group is looking at UAV policies of other law enforcement agencies and national organizations to establish best practices. The Department values individual’s privacy as well as a respect for constitutional protections.
Launching a department UAV program would require FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) approval. Police UAV’s would be regulated by many of the same FAA rules for hobbyist operators, including being prohibited from flying higher than 400 feet. If you have any questions or concerns about the possible implementation of UAV’s, please contact Lieutenant Kelliher at (909) 334-3067 or email@example.com.
