Think Green

Welcome to the Building Division’s

Chino Goes GreenWe all know that green house gases are polluting our atmosphere and have the potential to drastically alter our climate. But did you know that 48% of green house gases come from buildings? Inefficient homes need more and more energy to function, which puts more and more CO into the earth’s atmosphere. A healthy environment has been an important part of Chino’s history and we need to make sure that it is a part of its future.

10 Steps that you can take to help protect our environment:

  1. Change from incandescent to energy efficient fluorescent light bulbs.
  2. Put appliances like your TV, stereo, and coffee maker on a powerstrip so that you can easily turn them off when they are not needed. 15% of the average electric bill can be traced to appliances that stay on 24/7. This applies to all appliances with a flashing light or clock.
  3. Figure out how much water and electricity you are using and look for ways to cut back.
  4. Designate a specific place in your house for recyclables.
  5. If you are trying to landscape your yard, consider using plants that are native to California--they will save water and money.
  6. Do not cut down your trees! Trees absorb harmful CO2 and produce oxygen for us to breathe.
  7. Consider using solar panels as a way to conserve energy.
  8. If you are designing a new home or commercial building, orient windows and overhangs to take advantage of passive solar techniques to keep warm in the winter and cool in the summer.
  9. If you are putting on a room addition to your home, try to take advantage of rebate programs for energy efficient appliances, windows, doors, and insulation.
  10. Visit the Department of Energy's website for more information on tax incentives, new energy efficient building technology, and more ways to save money while saving the environment.
