Planning & Building Permits

Planning Permits

A planning permit is required for almost all exterior changes to any residential, commercial or industrial building in the City of Chino. The purpose of the permit is to ensure that the proposed exterior change complies with city codes and will be architecturally compatible with the existing site or building and other area sites or buildings The permit also ensures that such changes will not unduly infringe on the views and privacy of adjacent buildings.

Exterior changes include fences, windows, doors, room additions, trellises, patio covers and gazebos. A permit is usually required whether the exterior change involves new construction or replacement.

The planning permit is called an Administrative Approval, Site Approval, or Special Conditional Use Permit, depending on the extent of the proposed development or change to the property.

Building Permits

A building permit is required for all interior and exterior changes except for cosmetic changes such as carpeting or painting. A permit is required whether the change involves new construction or replacement.

The purpose of building permits is to ensure that the proposed work complies with state and local codes enacted for health, safety and energy conservation purposes.
The authority to require Building Permits is detailed in the City's Municipal Code and in the 1987 and 1988 Uniform Building Codes.

In many cases both a planning and building permit is required for exterior changes. The planning permit must be approved before the building permit can be obtained.
